An Introduction To Labeling

Whether it is a label, decal, or sticker you need there are a few things to consider before you throw down your money and make a purchase. By spending a few minutes purusing this primer you will be in a position to make some informed decisions and will have a better idea of what you need in the end.

First and formost you must concider the label application. How it will be used and what you will be applying it to. Not all adhesives are the same. For example, our white vinyl comes with a permenent acrylic adhesive and is not designed for application under freezing temperatures. So you wouldn't want to label frozen foods with this stock. You are better off using a paper with a cold-temperature adhesive. Some other things to consider are will the label be subject to chemicals such as solvents or cleansers, or will it be used outdoors. Will it be machine or hand applied? If in doubt ask your customer service representative what they would suggest and ask for a material sample for testing.

Cost is always a factor, and the three things that effect the the price is the material being used, the number of imprint colors and the size. Our pricing structure is based on the square inches of the label. So a 3" by 5" label will be priced out at 15 square inches. If it will be die cut an addition ¼" per side needs to be figured in. So in the above example the label would be priced out at 18 square inches (3.25 X 5.25=17.0625, round up to 18). If a special die shape is required and we don't have the die in-house one will have to be made. In general dies cost around $250-$300 but the price can vary depending on the complexity of the die outline so its best to contact the factory for an accurate die quote.

In closing, if there is something you don't understand or are unsure of please give us a call first and our customer service department will be glad to assist you with choosing the right label for the job.
